The Refuge

Sliding-scale housing for women, queer people, and families.

A place that was already thinking of you.

IF YOU NEED SOMEWHERE SAFE

This Is for You

The Refuge is a private, residential safe haven for women, queer people, and families with children who need somewhere safe to land.

Not a shelter. Not a waiting room. A home — with your own front door, your own kitchen, your own space to breathe. You can stay for as long as you need. Rent is based on what you can actually afford.

The Refuge is specifically a safe place for people escaping domestic violence, and for individuals referred through the Rainbow Railroad — an organization that helps LGBTQ+ people escape violence and persecution.

THE REFUGE & THE FLOWER FARM

Beauty Grown with Intention

The Refuge is a residential safe haven and working flower farm being developed by Glimmer Grove, Inc. in rural Litchfield County, Connecticut.

It will provide permanent, sliding-scale housing for women, queer people, and families with children — including survivors of domestic violence and individuals referred through the Rainbow Railroad. Multiple structures on several level acres, on a property that has been a place of welcome for generations.

Alongside the housing, The Refuge will cultivate a working flower farm — grown by residents, tended with care, and supplying cut flowers to the broader Sein & Skye family and the local community. The farm is not incidental. It is central. Growing something, tending something, watching something bloom — these are not hobbies. They are part of what healing looks like.

The Refuge is operated by Glimmer Grove, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. A portion of profits from The Bloomhouse Victorian B&B is dedicated to supporting The Refuge’s mission.

WHAT IT IS

Housing, farm, and connection.

🌷

THE FLOWER FARM

Land & Bloom at The Refuge.

IA working cut flower farm grown and tended by Refuge residents and community members. Seasonal blooms supplied to Sein & Skye properties, local florists, and farmers markets. The farm provides meaningful work, community, and income for residents who want it — on a completely voluntary basis, on their own timeline.

🏡

THE HOUSING

A Home, Not a Shelter

Multiple residential units across several historic structures. Private front doors. Resident gardens. Full kitchens. Quiet.  Sliding-scale rent based on actual income. No arbitrary time limits. The goal is stability — real, grounded, unhurried stability — so residents can imagine what comes next.

🌎

THE CONNECTIONS

Part of Something Larger

Residents of The Refuge have access to Glimmer Grove’s community center — the coffee bar, the library, the children’s wing, SMART Recovery, cooking classes, and community programming. The Refuge is private and residential. Glimmer Grove is the place to gather. Together they form a complete picture of what supported community living can look like.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Help us build The Refuge.

The Refuge is currently in development. We are seeking grant partners, mission-aligned funders, organizational partners, and individuals who believe that housing is a human right and that safety should not be contingent on income.

If you represent a foundation, CDFI, housing organization, domestic violence advocacy group, or LGBTQ+ safety organization — we would love to talk.

If you are an individual who wants to support this mission — follow us, share our story, and reach out.
