THE NAME
What Is Mast?
Mast is the ancient word for the wild harvest of the forest floor — the acorns, beechnuts, hickory nuts, and chestnuts that fall each autumn and have fed people, animals, and ecosystems for thousands of years.
A mast year, when the trees produce in great abundance, is a gift from the land that requires nothing of the farmer but the willingness to receive it.
This is the philosophy at the heart of Mast & Meadow: that the land, tended well and planted with intention, will feed you in ways you never had to plan for.
THE VISION
A Village on a Mountain
139 acres on a mountain in NW Connecticut — surrounded by 7,000 acres of permanently protected lands, crowned by a mature hardwood forest of white oak, shagbark hickory, American beech, sugar maple, and eastern hemlock.
The mast harvest — acorns, hickory nuts, beechnuts — is already there, falling every autumn, waiting to be received.
Mast & Meadow is a cooperative food production village built in pocket neighborhoods — clusters of homes arranged around shared gardens, a communal kitchen, and the rhythms of a life lived in genuine community. Inspired by Sieben Linden in Germany. Designed for women and queer people. Open to anyone who is ready to take root.
